Hewitt's housing stock is dominated by single-family detached homes, many built during the community's growth into a Waco bedroom suburb. Lots tend to be larger than in older in-town Waco neighborhoods, and much of the city is laid out in subdivisions around the FM 1695 and FM 2063 corridors. Newer construction has continued to add to the inventory on the city's edges. The housing mix, combined with Midway ISD schools, positions Hewitt as a family-oriented alternative to living within Waco itself.

Though Hewitt is a relatively compact city, it is organized around a handful of established subdivisions rather than a traditional downtown. Residential areas cluster near Midway Middle School and Hewitt Elementary and along the major farm-to-market roads that frame the city. Neighboring communities—Woodway to the north and west, Robinson to the east, and Lorena to the south—extend the suburban fabric of the Waco area. Because Hewitt shares its northern border with Waco, many of its neighborhoods blend into the broader south-of-Waco suburban corridor.

Hewitt offers a quiet, family-centered way of life with easy access to Waco's amenities. The community carries a suburban-rural mix: most residents own their homes, and the area attracts families and young professionals. Community events in Hewitt Park and the surrounding park system provide a focal point for local life. For employment, higher education, dining, and entertainment, residents look north to Waco—home to Baylor University and a redeveloped downtown—while enjoying the slower pace and open space of Hewitt itself.

Public education in Hewitt is provided by Midway Independent School District, which serves Hewitt and portions of the surrounding Waco-area communities and enrolls roughly 8,000–9,000 students across its campuses. Hewitt Elementary School and Midway Middle School are both located within the city. The district is a significant driver of residential demand in Hewitt and the surrounding area, anchoring the city's identity as a family-oriented suburb of Waco.

Hewitt sits at the intersection of Farm Road 2063 and Farm Road 1695, about eight miles southwest of central Waco, and shares a northern border with Waco. Interstate 35, the major north-south corridor linking Waco to Austin and the Dallas–Fort Worth area, is a short drive to the east through Waco. Waco Regional Airport serves the metropolitan area for regional air travel. Daily commuting patterns center on Waco, with the farm-to-market roads providing direct local access and I-35 handling longer trips.

Hewitt's recreational core is its municipal park system, anchored by the 32-acre Hewitt Park, which features playgrounds—including an ADA-accessible play area—sports fields, volleyball courts, a baseball backstop, and a large covered pavilion used for reservations and community events. The city promotes its parks and green spaces as a centerpiece of family life. For larger-scale recreation, residents can reach Waco's Cameron Park, the Brazos River, Lake Waco, and Baylor University athletic events within a short drive.
